The Situation
Charles had been rated 90% VA disabled for several years and believed he had reached the highest rating he would ever receive. Although he continued to live with worsening symptoms, he assumed there were no additional opportunities available.
After learning more about secondary conditions and how overlooked disabilities can affect a veteran's overall disability picture, Charles decided to have his records reviewed by VetRECCE.
During Charles' personalized Claim Intelligence Review, we identified two significant conditions that had not been fully developed within his claim:
Bilateral radiculopathy associated with his service-connected back condition
Sleep apnea supported by his medical history and evidence
We also identified opportunities to better organize and present the medical evidence supporting his disabilities.
Rather than guessing what to file next, Charles moved forward with a clearer understanding of his disability picture and the evidence needed to support his claim.
The Outcome
Following the submission of his updated claim, Charles was awarded 100% Permanent & Total VA disability.
His new rating not only increased his monthly tax-free compensation but also unlocked valuable federal and state benefits for both him and his family.
Life After 100% P&T
Reaching 100% Permanent & Total significantly changed Charles' financial future.
In addition to increased monthly compensation, he became eligible for benefits that may include:
CHAMPVA healthcare for eligible dependents
Chapter 35 Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA)
Federal student loan discharge (when applicable)
Property tax exemptions (depending on state eligibility)
Expanded VA healthcare
Additional state veteran benefits
Understanding these benefits helped Charles and his family plan with greater financial confidence.
Charles' Thoughts
"I honestly thought 90% was as high as I could go. VetRECCE helped me understand that my disability picture wasn't complete. Once I understood what had been overlooked, everything finally made sense."

Lessons Learned
Charles' story highlights an important reality: a disability rating isn't always the end of the journey.
Many veterans believe they've reached their maximum rating simply because they've stopped looking for answers. In some cases, overlooked secondary conditions, incomplete medical evidence, or changes in health over time may create new opportunities to pursue an increase.
Every veteran's situation is unique, but understanding your complete disability picture is often the first step toward making informed decisions.
