“Many veterans believe 90% means they are far from 100%. In many cases, the opposite is true.”
One of the most misunderstood parts of the VA disability system is something veterans often call VA math.
Unlike normal math, VA ratings do not simply add together. That is why a veteran can have multiple service-connected conditions and still feel confused about how their total rating was calculated.
The good news is this: many veterans rated at 90 percent may be closer to 100 percent than they realize.
Understanding how the system works can help reveal opportunities that are often missed.
The VA uses a combined rating formula instead of simple addition.
Rather than stacking percentages one after another, each new rating is applied to the portion of the body considered “not yet disabled.”
That means:
50% + 50% does not equal 100%
70% + 30% does not equal 100%
Several smaller ratings can combine differently than expected
This system often surprises veterans.
Two veterans may both be rated at 90 percent, but be in very different positions.
One veteran may actually be:
85% rounded to 90
Another may be:
94% rounded to 90
Both are officially rated at 90 percent, but the second veteran may need only one targeted increase or one additional condition to reach 100 percent.
That is why understanding the real number matters.
Many veterans remain at 90 percent because they never review:
whether current conditions have worsened
whether secondary conditions developed
whether presumptive conditions apply
whether prior ratings appear underrated
whether a smarter filing sequence exists
Often, the issue is not eligibility. It is strategy.
Depending on the individual case, common pathways may include:
increased migraine ratings
worsening PTSD or mental health symptoms
radiculopathy related to spine conditions
sleep apnea with proper support
secondary conditions caused by medications
presumptive exposure-related conditions
Every veteran’s situation is different, but many pathways exist.
Moving from 90 percent to 100 percent may impact:
monthly tax-free compensation
dependent benefits
CHAMPVA healthcare
Chapter 35 education benefits
state tax relief in some states
long-term household stability
For many families, the difference is substantial.
If you are currently rated at 90 percent:
Determine your actual combined percentage
Review current ratings for possible increases
Identify overlooked secondary conditions
Check presumptive exposure eligibility
Build a structured plan before filing
Being rated at 90 percent does not automatically mean you are far from 100 percent.
In many cases, it simply means no one has reviewed the numbers strategically.
